Full Story

Battle for Athens is a Bellingham, Washington–born rap/electronic trio made up of Ritzy Fitz (vocals), Big Ballin’ Tony Z a.k.a. #Raccune (vocals, producer), and Mackamill (vocals, DJ). Formed in September 2008, the group is still anchored in Bellingham today, with Fitz now residing in Kent, WA—a small geographic split that hasn’t changed the main mission: keep the bars sharp, keep the beats current, and keep the whole thing unpredictable.

Originally launched as a side-project branching off Haunted Authors (Fitz, Ballin’, and Earwig the Villain), Battle for Athens quickly became its own main lane. Where Haunted Authors leaned more traditionally hip-hop, Battle for Athens was built to roam—pulling rap into electronic and experimental territory without losing the grit or the humor. When dubstep started gaining momentum in the late 2000s, the group jumped in early, rapping over bass-heavy electronic production before it was the obvious move. That willingness to follow the sound of the moment (and then warp it) became a defining trait.

Their evolution comes in clear eras. The early phase crystallized around 2009, when dubstep influence and club-ready tempos shaped the foundation. A second major chapter arrived with Daemon Tether (2014), marked by elevated production and more ambitious genre-blending—an era where the experimentation didn’t just show up, it took over. Most recently, Battle for Athens sharpened their modern edge with Sepulchre (2024), an album heavily influenced by UK Drill, bringing a colder, more precise intensity while still keeping the group’s personality intact.

That personality matters. Lyrically, Battle for Athens is abstract by design—wide-ranging, quick-turning, and intentionally not too serious. Themes like sex, violence, drugs, and rock-and-roll show up, but rarely as grim confessionals. Instead, they’re often treated like chaotic props in a larger comedic universe, regularly contrasted with strangely wholesome or surreal subject matter: eating incredible food, traveling the world, and drifting into odd scenarios that feel half brag, half cartoon, half fever dream. The result is music that can hit hard without taking itself too seriously—aggressive energy with a wink.

Sonically, the throughline across every record is simple: rap over the sound of right now. Battle for Athens has consistently chased contemporary electronic and rap production styles while threading in global textures—ranging from tribal guarachero to Indian House and other international influences. Even as the palette changes, there’s a heartbeat that returns again and again: 140 BPM, a favorite tempo and recurring anchor point for #Raccune’s production approach. The beats may travel, but the momentum stays relentless.

Across three full-length albums—When in Paris Do as the Romans Do (2011), Daemon Tether (2014), and Sepulchre (2024)—Battle for Athens has built a catalog that’s equal parts forward-looking and unhinged in the best way: music for people who want technical rapping, heavy electronic pressure, and a sense that anything could happen next.

Sound & Influences

We came up rapping over late-2000s dubstep and bass music, with early influences like Rusko, Caspa, and Modestep shaping that foundation. Over time we pulled heavily from grime/140 culture and modern UK Drill, alongside genre-blending electronic music and global club rhythms. On the rap side, our writing and delivery are influenced by the dark energy of Three 6 Mafia and the abstract, playful approach of MF DOOM and Kool Keith. Beat-wise, we’re inspired by hard regional club and drill aesthetics—from 3BallMTY-style rhythmic swing to the raw UK edge associated with groups like Harlem Spartans.
